At the beginning of the volume is inserted a letter of James Ballantine, glass painter and song writer to the Dean of the Faculty of Advocates, 1865, giving an extract of John Castle`s will 1864, bequeathing the manuscript to the Advocates` Library. At the back of the volume are recorded financial statements concerning the monument. The rest of the volume is comprised of copies of reports, minutes of meetings and correspondence, 1832-1853.
Legal and financial papers of the Campbell family of Calder.
Most of the papers concern the affairs of John Campbell, when he succeeded his grandfather, Sir Hugh Campbell, to the estate of Calder in 1716. Others concern his estate in Islay, the factor of which was James Anderson, Writer to the Signet.
Letter-book of John Ewing, Writer to the Signet, legal agent for the Earls of Morton, concerning the Earls` affairs in Orkney and Shetland.
The correspondence is mostly legal and financial in nature, dealing with the running of the estate, the tenants` accounts, and the supply of butter, beer and malt, but there are some references to contemporary events such as the South Sea Bubble and the threat of a Spanish invasion. There is a break in the correspondence from 1721 to 1730, and some of the later letters are signed R E.
